Book Your Trip to Nepal

Dear Volunteer.

We've tried to make this easy for you and provided a way that you can book online, much the same way you'd make a hotel reservation or book a flight. Thank you for choosiing us to host you in Nepal.

PRICING - the price includes total, twenty-four hour a day support from our staff, a clean room in a modern house in a secure location, breakfast and dinner daily, wi-fi, bedding, towels and unlimited friendliness.

It couldn't be easier. Pick your dates, choose your program (which you can also change later) and click on "book now."   30 days prior to your start date you'll be sent an invoice to pay. There is no payment required to reserve a place unless you are booking less than one week before your start that. In that case, payment in full is required.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Take action. Change your life as you improve the lives of others. Here's where you volunteer to go to Nepal and build, teach or heal.

HER Farm: Changing the World for Women in Nepal

HER Farm: Changing the World for Women in Nepal | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
The most touching moment I can think of, that demonstrates our impact, involves an 82 year old grandmother from the Brahmin caste (high caste). During the aftermath of the quakes, many families came together at Her Farm to create a communal kitchen. This meant families from all castes.

One day a woman voiced her discontent at eating food from a kitchen where low caste women were working, as some of our girls are Dalit (untouchable caste).

Grandma looked at the woman, and said:

“What does that matter now, we suffer together, and we’ll eat together.”

Or words to that effect. A huge breakthrough moment that an 82 year old high caste woman would think, must less utter those words out loud. She’s our immediate neighbour, she’s been around Her Farm a lot, and it has changed her thinking, or at least softened her position on some things.

Volunteer to teach, heal, grow or build in Nepal.

Being, Not Doing: How to be the best volunteer in Nepal ever. The Mountain Volunteer News

Being, Not Doing: How to be the best volunteer in Nepal ever. The Mountain Volunteer News | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
The best volunteers are Being, not Doing. Not long ago a volunteer posted on a blog about a conversation with the local school principal. In that conversation she asked what the principal thought about volunteers at the school. He replied that he was not sure since he'd never been outside of Nepal and couldn't know what changes would look like, what our life looked like. It's an important point.

We go to volunteer thinking we want to DO something. The people we wish to help may have no idea what we are talking about or thinking about, they have no frame of reference for understanding. It first takes building friendship and trust and that comes from Being, not from Doing.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

The time spent playing with kids, learning the language so they could say a few things to the locals, working hard and with the same tools as the locals. These ways of being ingratiated them to the community and strong bonds were made. From those bonds, doing becomes possible because there is trust. Without first Being, there is no Doing.

So when you come to Nepal and volunteer, be most mindful of who you are being, then you think about what you are doing.

Young women are growing hope at Her Farm in Nepal: The Mountain Fund News

Young women are growing hope at Her Farm in Nepal: The Mountain Fund News | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it

Scott MacLennan: "When we started Her Farm we had a vision of women coming from abusive family situations and living at the farm where they could support themselves and their children. That's still our mission and vision at the farm, however something else is taking place at the farm, something unexpected and wonderful."

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

How do you grow hope on an organic farm?  Go to Her Farm in the Himalayas to find out.

Alternative building methods taught at Her Farm | News From Nepal - The Mountain Fund News

Alternative building methods taught at Her Farm | News From Nepal - The Mountain Fund News | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
More than 80% of the homes in Mankhu were destroyed or seriously damaged in the April, 2015 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. The challenge that lies ahead is how to rebuild and make these homes safer. The typical village home is made with stones and mud mortar. While there is a center beam in the home, there's no structural component that ties all the walls together, such as a ring beam, so each wall moves independent of the others.

HER Farm: Volunteers from Around the World are Fighting Domestic Abuse in Nepal

HER Farm: Volunteers from Around the World are Fighting Domestic Abuse in Nepal | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
Scott and Sunita MacLennan:

People are always welcome to donate, but the majority of our funding at Her Farm comes from volunteers that we host at the farm.

About 150 people a year from 26 countries (and counting), visit the farm to help in the fields, the classrooms, with repairs and in other capacities.

This provides many women with the job at the farm - cooking, hospitality management, logistics; and of course it gives them the opportunity to practice English, the business language of Nepal, which many women have been excluded from learning.

So, visiting www.HerFarmNepal.org and donating is good and kind.

Actually visiting Her Farm as a volunteer is even more beneficial.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Donations are kind.  Actually going to Nepal as a Mountain Volunteer is transformative.

HER Farm: Safe-Haven from Abuse in Nepal

HER Farm: Safe-Haven from Abuse in Nepal | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
Her Farm quickly became much more than a safe-haven from abuse. Young and unmarried women sought employment there to stave off parental pressure for marriage. Today there are women from wide variety of backgrounds as well as castes. They live together, work together and support each other’s success and wellbeing, like a giant family of 25 women.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

There are many ways you can help Her Farm thrive. Volunteers are needed to teach, heal, build and grow.  You can go to Nepal and make a difference.

HER Farm: Fighting Domestic Abuse in Nepal

HER Farm: Fighting Domestic Abuse in Nepal | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
Editor’s Note:

Domestic abuse in Nepal is rampant.

The leading cause of death among women of childbearing age is suicide. Widows are tossed out and branded as witches. Victims of the sex trade are shunned by families.

These women have nowhere to go. They are skilled farmers, they can support themselves and feed their children if they have a little land.

Her Farm is a healthy, vibrant mountain community where women and children have access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity in an environment where human rights are valued and respected.

Her Farm is growing hope for women in the Himalayas.

Her Farm is supported by Mountain Volunteer and the Mountain Fund.  Find out how you can go to Nepal and make a difference: Volunteer Today!

How our volunteers to Nepal help fund our work | News About Volunteering in Nepal  | The Mountain Volunteer News

How our volunteers to Nepal help fund our work | News About Volunteering in Nepal  | The Mountain Volunteer News | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
We've been working in Nepal for about a decade, on the ground, doing real projects like hospitals, clinics, schools and support of women and children. Income earned from supporting volunteers helps to fund these projects. Under the US IRS rules, an educational organization can be classified as a charity or 501c3 even though they don't do any work at all on the ground in countries where they send volunteers, or in some cases, very, very little. When you volunteer with us, you are working on our very own project sites and helping to support other projects such as the school uniforms for girls project which you can learn more about here.

Come join us in Nepal. Have a great experience for yourself and see first hand what we are doing for the people of Nepal.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Mountain Volunteer does real work first hand in Nepal.  Volunteer to get your hands on the real experience of leaning and growing as you help folks to help themselves.

About Volunteering in Nepal

About Volunteering in Nepal | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
The Mountain Volunteer. Life-changing experiences is what we offer
The Mountain Volunteer was founded by Scott and Sunita as a natural outgrowth of their dedication and service to Nepal as The Mountain Fund our 501c3 charity.

Scott MacLennan began serving in Nepal over a decade ago and established health clinics and hospitals in rural communities. In 2010 he was recognized for the Sir Edmund Hillary Medal for his service in Nepal. Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to climb Mt. Everest, the world's highest peak, which is located in Nepal.

Sunita Subedi Sharma (MacLennan) was born and raised in Nepal. Her childhood memories are of persecution for having been born a daughter, rather than a son. Since early childhood she's felt in the most personal and direct means, the oppression that women in Nepal face daily. Later, after suffering domestic abuse in an arranged marriage, she left that marriage and determined to dedicate her life to helping women and children in Nepal to have a better life.

Together we invite you to be a part of our work, to join with us in helping women and children and improving lives for thousands in Nepal.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Volunteer to work with people who have made a lifelong commitment to improve human rights and living conditions in Nepal.

Stop Making Paper Orphans of Nepal's Children | A Mountain Fund Project

Stop Making Paper Orphans of Nepal's Children | A Mountain Fund Project | Nepal - The Mountain Volunteer: Heal - Teach - Build | Scoop.it
Every year hundreds of Nepali children are turned into "paper orphans" just because their parents cannot care for them and work at the same time. One of the only affordable day-care centers in Kathmandu, the Orchid Garden, has the solution to this problem. A safe, affordable place for children to stay and learn while poor parents work to just get that day's meal. Perhaps as many as 60% of Nepal's "orphans" are economic orphans and should not be in institutions, but in day care. (source UNICEF)
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Mountain Fund and Mountain Volunteer provides opportunities for volunteer teachers who want to work in Nepal.  Contact us for details about this life changing experience.
